The behind the scenes guide to local secrets in San Diego. This issue will cover the Bahia Belle Sternwheeler. A local favorite that takes you for a ride across Mission Bay on the Victorian style paddle wheeler. Your cruise starts when you choose. The Bahia Belle takes off on a regular rotation between The Catamaran Resort on the Pacific Beach side of Mission Bay and the Bahia Resort on the Mission Beach side of Mission Bay. Departing every hour on the hour from the Catamaran and every half hour on the half hour departing from the Bahia. Check with either resort for seasonal departure times.
Imagine a three level boat cruising across the bay at sunset as the lights of the beach come alive. The three levels consist of the main floor, ideal for relaxing and visiting with others as you gaze off through the portholes. The second level rocks with the live band and cocktail bar. The upper deck is the open air rooftop level giving you the full-on cruising experience. The stars are out and if you time your departure just right, you'll find yourself watching the fireworks overhead from Sea World. That's right, you can be relaxing with your honey while sipping on a cocktail taking in the evening as the fireworks starting going off overhead. It's awesome! If you’re interested in taking the whole family, don't worry, kids are invited to cruise up until 9:00pm. That's when the boat really comes alive and the band gets started.
You can ride for as long as you like back and forth until the boat docks for the evening at the Bahia. Again, check seasonal departure and ending times. The price is $10 per person for adults. I never went with a child, so look into that. Make sure you get off of the boat where you started though, you don’t want to find yourself on the other side of the bay from where your car is or the taxi dropped you off. Oh, remember your camera if it's a sunset cruise!
